It’s been HOT. And until just recently, we’ve been having some bone-dry weather! A few wild storms here and there aren’t quite cutting it for your plants though. They need consistent moisture to thrive, especially your veggie garden! Here are a few DIY watering gadgets that can make you AND your plants happy.
Maybe a rain barrel isn’t necessarily DIY (it’s more Do It Itself) but it will cut down on your water bill! And you can set up a drip irrigation system using one of the techniques below, just use your barrel as the water supply. That’s pretty DIY, right?!
For a smaller garden area, create a single line or grid of PVC pipes with drilled holes. Watch the video here!
Have a massive vegetable garden? An afternoon spent setting up this watering system can really save you time on making sure your plants stay hydrated. Scope out this impressive project here!
Rinse and empty a plastic bottle and use a drill or nail to create small holes along the bottom half. Slip the bottle into a nylon stocking or sock, to prevent dirt or roots from clogging up the holes you’ve created. Bury the plastic bottle near your plants, covering with soil all the way up to the screw-on opening portion. Water the plants and surrounding area first so the bottle doesn’t immediately drain. Fill the water bottle up and cap it. A funnel might help. Check every so often and refill when needed. This ensures your plants are properly hydrated – not over or under watered.
Okay so the only DIY part of this is putting together the Nelson Rain Train from the box. BUT we think it’s too cool not to share! The sprinkler covers up to 13,500 ft! You supply the hose and trail it around your yard to create a train path. Hook up the Rain Train and let the tractor do the rest. It follows the hose “track” back to a ramp that automatically shuts off the train. How does it move? Water pressure builds up in the interior transmission which slowly turns the big wheels. It may not be the MOST exciting thing to watch (it’ll take about an hour to finish depending on hose length) but it sure is cool!
Empty a 2 liter soda bottle and drill holes into one side. Attach to a hose with duct tape and let it rip! This is mostly just fun for kids and dogs but if you positioned it right, it could also hit some plants!
